  • Google Ramping Up AdSense Video Distribution

    Google is finally starting to ramp up the use of its AdSense distribution network to deliver video. As today's NYTimes piece describes, Dow Jones, Conde Nast and others are participating. This follows on previous announcements with MTV, Sony BMG and Warner Music Group. As I said in "7 Broadband Video Trends for 2007", Google is extremely well-positioned to lead the nascent video syndication market by leveraging both AdSense and AdWords. Clearly while the major networks grapple with how to deal with Google/YouTube, other media companies seeking to harness Google's distribution might are moving ahead.

     
  • Discovery Getting It with UGV Contest

    Multichannel News (note: subscription required) describes Discovery's plan to have users submit parodies of Discovery's top shows. Great example of how a major media company is "getting it" with UGV. I've said for a while that major media companies should take a gradual approach with UGV, first enabling it in a controlled manner, rather than the free-for-all seen on YouTube.
     
    This initiative from Discovery lets fans express their love of favorite programs through creative parodies, which Discovery will selectively showcase on-air and online. Hopefully they'll enable the parodies to be easily passed around and will be promoted during the shows themselves. I expect more of these kinds of efforts from big media companies going forward.
     
  • Dvorak and I in Agreement on Copyright Control

    John Dvorak has a good post at MarketWatch regarding Viacom's take down notice to YouTube. Although he's harsher than I've been in the past ("The company is just clueless about new media"), his general point that this is a control issue is similar to what I said back in November in "Big Media's Most Vexing Challenge".
     
    Big media companies need to adjust their copyright control mindsets if they're going to exploit the power of new broadband distribution models. Distinguishing between use of their content that drives new promotion and awareness vs. use of their content that undermines their business models is the key. Just lumping everything into the latter category shows both paranoia and lack of understanding of how the market is shifting.
     
  • Newspapers’ Broadband Video Getting Respect

    Kurt Andersen's piece in New York magazine, You Must be Streaming, is getting a lot of viral activity today. It's the first mainstream media piece about the seriousness with which newspapers are going after broadband video and what this may mean for broadcasters.

    Of course, last spring we released our report on how the top 40 U.S. newspapers are pursuing broadband video. Based on our analysis, it was clear that a high-stakes battle was on the horizon, as newspapers began to extend their brands and skills into the broadband video arena. This battle is only going to intensify as more newspapers realize that video is well within their reach and there's a whole lot of new revenue to be had by offering traditional and new advertisers the opportunity to run video ads adjacent to their budding video initiatives.

     
  • Great Webcast on Broadcasters and Broadband Video Yesterday

    Yesterday I hosted the 5th in a series of webcasts in which I review key findings from our industry reports. In this webcast I covered highlights from our Q4 '06 report "The Broadcast TV Industry and Broadband Video: Confronting New Challenges, Embracing New Opportunities".

    The broadcast TV industry - both networks and local stations - are facing lots of challenges and the most recent, and possibly most disruptive is broadband video. In the report we review best practices and what both networks and stations are currently doing with broadband video.   • About.com Firmly on Board with Video

    About announced it is doubling the number of videos available at the site. This is a natural extension for the site and allows their guides to become even more prominent experts. I like the session-based ad approach integrating video and text. A nice move away from pre-rolls only.

    The whole "how-to" category is just starting to be exploited using broadband video. I'm looking for a lot more activity here...

     
  • Viacom-YouTube. The Gloves are Coming Off

    Well not quite yet, as the lawsuits are not yet flying. But we're getting there. After some flip-flopping on this last fall, today Viacom officially told YouTube to take down its clips, reputed to number over 100,000. Obviously you'd need to be involved in these negotiations to know the details of what the offers and counter-offers have been, but it's a disappointment for both parties not to be able to work things out.

    As I wrote back in November, "Big Media's Most Vexing Challenge (and How to Overcome It)", companies like Viacom are going through a painful adjustment process to the new broadband-dominated world. This flare-up with YouTube is yet another example.

     
  • IKEA Shycast Video Bed Making Campaign

    This Shycast-IKEA campaign caught my eye this morning. As many of you know, I’m a big believer that the openness of broadband video makes it appealing to lots of companies that can creatively tap its potential.

    In this case, startup Shycast is creating contests for big brands to enable customers to submit video in order to win prizes. I like the social media angle here, however, in looking at the site, the part that’s missing to me is the engagement with the IKEA brand. All I can see is an IKEA banner. It might as well be from anyone. The site needs to be infused with the IKEA brand personality to make it really feel like an IKEA contest. Given today is just launch day, I’ll standby and look for improvements.
