Movieclips.com Raises $3 Million Series A Round
Movieclips.com, which offers access to over 14,000 licensed movie clips, is announcing its Series A round of $3 million from Shasta Ventures, First RoundCapital and angel investors. In addition, the company is releasing new curated top 10 lists across categories as well as mashups.
I last wrote about Movieclips.com in March when it opened up for general use and began making available its APIs. One of the reasons I was a fan was that the site showed how new value can be mined from archived long-form content, especially when repackaged in web and social media-friendly short-form bites.
Movieclips.com's founders have done the hard work of gaining legitimate rights from studios to distribute memorable clips. These clips have an infinite shelf-life and value in the Internet era as countless movie-related sites, blogs, Facebook pages, fan sites, ticketing sites, databases and other outlets look to share some of Hollywood's best moments. Through the use of feeds and APIs, Movieclips.com has made its clips highly usable to third-parties.
In addition, Movieclips.com has been very clever about assigning all sorts of metadata to each clip, which in turn makes searching easier and more accurate, plus opening up tons of opportunities to cross-reference and recommend additional clips based on various attributes. It's easy to get lost in the site, zigging and zagging from one related clip to the next.
