• Limelight Video Platform Introduces Spring '11 Release

Limelight Video Platform (LVP) is announcing its Spring 2011 release this morning, adding new features that leverage the underlying Limelight computing platform. LVP is the new name of the updated product from Delve Networks, which Limelight acquired about 8 months ago. Yesterday I caught up with Alex Castro, VP/GM of LVP to learn more.

There are 4 new features LVP is introducing:

Live streaming, including to mobile devices (Apple iOS, Android, Blackberry). Same tools are available as on-demand player such as metadata management, player customization, geo/domain restrictions, etc. Alex said SXSW used the LVP live streaming last month and it scaled well.

Mobile and device support which offers auto-detect of user's device with Universal Embed Code.

Real time analytics, which leverage the underlying Limelight platform to deliver metrics quicker.

Advanced workflow, which includes customizable metadata properties, "player edge scaling" (improved content caching for faster delivery), video clipper tool to create short clips, media RSS support, mid-roll ad insertion and player language localization.

All features are good steps forward for LVP in an intensely competitive online video platform (OVP) landscape. Alex believes that LVP's integration with Limelight's underlying computing platform gives LVP an advantage over other OVPs (assuming of course that the content provider uses Limelight delivery as well). Overall the OVP space is still very dynamic, with consolidation happening, (primarily led by KIT Digital) and lots of innovation happening by major players.
