HBO Go can only take so much — and apparently, the highly anticipated season four premiere of “Games of Thrones” on Sunday was enough to bring it down.
HBO Go addressed the problem on its Twitter account after a significant amount of viewers took to the social-media platform to complain about being unable to access the website.

HBO blamed the problems on “excessive volume.” The premium cable service also promised to provide the episode on HBO On Demand soon for those with certain cable providers.

UPDATE: At 11:39 p.m. ET Sunday, HBO Go tweeted that the service had been restored to “several platforms” with full recovery expected soon.

This is not the first time something similar has happened to HBO. Last month, the season finale of “True Detective” also proved overwhelming for the website, and HBO Go addressed the issue on Twitter then as well after the complaints began to roll in.
In the wake of the “True Detective” crash, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes pledged at an investor conference to invest more into HBO Go in order to keep these kind of malfunctions from happening again.
