Italian Serie A soccer games, led by Cristiano Ronaldo and his Juventus team, are moving from ESPN to CBS Sports and Paramount+ in the U.S. market starting next season.
As part of a three-year agreement unveiled on Thursday to run to 2024, ViacomCBS has nabbed the exclusive U.S. rights to the Serie A Championship, the top division in Italian soccer, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. Paramount+, the studio’s streaming platform, will offer around 400 club matches live each season through 2024.
That includes all 380 Serie A matches, at least 25 Coppa Italia matches and the Supercoppa Italiana match each year. Select matches will air on CBS Sports linear platforms, including CBS Sports Network.
“We are building critical mass in soccer, and the addition of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana is another major step in the expansion of CBS Sports’ extensive lineup of live soccer coverage on Paramount+ and across our linear and digital platforms,” Jeffrey Gerttula, executive vp and general manager of CBS Sports Digital said in a statement.
CBS Sports will debut Serie A games in August with the start of the 2021-2022 season.
The U.S. Serie A rights deal that includes Paramount+ marks another key TV sports property landing on a digital platform. The National Football League recently reached broad new agreements with its television partners that included Thursday Night Football rights going exclusively to Amazon after they were airing on Fox.
