Xbox 360, Lagging in Sales, Will Cost Less

Xbox 360

Microsoft said on Thursday that it was cutting the price of its Xbox 360 game console. Starting this Friday, its base model will now sell for $199, down from $279. That makes the 360 the cheapest of the new generation of consoles — and, pointedly, cheaper than the $249 Nintendo Wii.

The consoles, of course, aren’t interchangeable, and price is hardly the sole arbiter of whether a console sells. Among the other bits of context here worth noting:

  • Microsoft also cut the price of the Xbox last year at this time, so such a cut is unsurprising. Console makers have traditionally cut the prices of their machines over time to expand the user base.
  • Xbox, which jumped out to an early lead on its competition — Sony’s PlayStation 3 and the Wii — has struggled more recently. In July, Microsoft sold 205,000 units, which was less than both the PS3 (225,000) and the Wii (555,000), according to figures released two weeks ago by the NPD Group, a market research firm.

Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for the 360, said Microsoft’s decision to drop the price was partly in keeping with an effort to stimulate demand over the holidays. He noted that 75 percent of console sales happen in the fourth quarter.

He also said Microsoft’s research showed that 75 percent of the sales of the original Xbox and the PlayStation 2 happened after the price fell below $200.

“There’s a huge audience that aren’t willing to pay more than $200,” he said.

He argued that Wii sales don’t come at the expense of Xbox sales.

“We’re a complementary experience to the Wii,” he said.

Okay even tough XBOX is reducing the 1 time price of the 360, but don’t forget that ALL of the games are over 59.00 a peice…the Wii maybe a little more as a 1 time fee, but all of their games are cheeper and go down in price much faster than XBOX. For all the under age children, hey parents would you really rather pay less for more goar, destruction and the possibility that all the XBOX’s violent games would turn your sweet innocent kids into more muderers, theives and let’s go there fat; did you see South Parks video game episode??? Maybe you should have, it is our kids in reality. But wait, the Wii has actual makes you participate physicaly with the controls and games, even have the Wii Fit. Now which one would the whole family play, even grandmom and grandad? Wow really a choice there is your not so bright and like eating your video games instead of food since you can’t afford both thanks to our government.

Are the lagging sales due to the price or could it be that the 360 is a flawed product. Most eventually burn out (“red circle of death”) and require repair by microsoft. Look at ebay or search online and see for yourself. To charge $300 or $100 for a flawed product is PAINFUL.

Xbox live is a subscription service that costs like 50 dollars a year while playstation offers the multiplayer experience with builtin wifi for FREE. Therefore this price cut probably will not have much impact on this sales trend.

Wow Susie Q., You’re dumb. You think the Wii is the savior of the world’s youth apparently. The problem is that once the novelty of the Wiimote wears off, people quit playing their Wii. So all the awesomely fitness inducing games go unplayed. I know several people who bought a Wii and most of them never play it. But go ahead and act like the 360 is the devil in video game form… I’m sure everyone will believe it.

If the PS3 can only muster 20K more units at a time when their BIGGEST game to date has been recently released and has only been on the market half as long, . . who is in trouble?
The 360 still has their biggest games of the year right around the corner, and with the price cut, look for the 360 to wipe the floor with the PS3 this holiday.

Wow! That’s a mouthful coming from two obviously uninformed consumers. Do you believe everything that you read, susieQ and Disgruntled 360 owner? Or do you work for Sony and Nintendo. To a few of your points, since the Xbox 360 has been out for a full year longer than either of the competition, the selection of Platinum game titles for the console costing a mere $20 is pretty extensive containing plenty of games rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. New games for any of the next gen consoles (PS3, Wii or 360) cost $50 or $60 by default due to the costs associated with making these games, and that’s just pure fact. I have had two 360’s for two years (one in my office and one in my living room) and only one of them had the “red rings of death”, a problem which was resolved by Microsoft at NO COST and within a few weeks. The new models of 360’s on store shelves now also have different chip sets in them that virtually guarantee this “over heating” problem will not occur. As far as the Wii getting your kids to physically participate, no game console can or should ever replace kids getting OUT OF THE HOUSE for this type of activity. Sales figures will show you that while the Wii console is selling like hot cakes, the software for this console is not. This means that there are a TON of Wii’s out there that only have one or two games being played on it, if it’s being played at all. The Wii is a novelty item, much like Tickle Me Elmo. I own a Wii, and can tell you it gets played far less than my 360. I have three young children that play both the Wii and the 360 with me and I don’t anticipate them becoming killers. It’s UP TO THE PARENTS to ensure that THEY are raising their kids, NOT THE VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. It is a little known fact that the 360 is the ONLY CONSOLE that has parental controls as a standard function on the console. Parents can limit the amount of time their children spend playing video games or limit their children to only be able to play games of a certain ESRB rating. They can also limit who they can communicate with in the on-line community to protect them from any threats. Like I have already said, I own both a Wii and a 360, and hope to purchase a PS3 this Christmas (I hear they make a great, cheap Blu-ray player). I enjoy video games (mostly on my 360), but I enjoy my children more. Please become an informed consumer and do not listen to the trash people like susieQ and Disgruntled 360 owner post on forums like these.

I am a Playstation fan. Now that you know where my gaming dollar goes to, let me now educate you on some things. Video games do not turn innocent children into violent criminals. I didn’t see a rise in tennis activity when Pong was the only game console in the home. Parent your kids, see what they are doing, give them games that are appropriate for the age that they are, do your job and stop looking for someone to blame for your mistakes.
Disgruntled 360 owner, first of all it’s called the “red ring of death” and most 360 owners know this. Second, could Xbox 360 sales be lagging due to it’s one year head start of the other consoles? I think that could be the reason for it’s current position. Wait until the holiday season is over and find out how things turn out between the PS3 and the 360. I didn’t mention the Wii because it will be number one in sales after the holidays yet again. Not too bad for a gaming system that doesn’t have any real games on it.

Are you kidding me.
You can’t even compare the two units. One is next-generation and the other is “the fun one.”
Never mind the fact that the 360 has been out a full two years longer then the rest of the consoles. I’ve had my 360 Elite for over a year with no problems… As well as I have seen freind’s PS3’s overheat and burn out.
Every product has problems, the 360 more then some, but when it comes down to it, let’s face it, when everyone already has one because of the quality product that has been out for so long, of course sales are lagging!

To poster #1:

Wow I’ve never seen more misconceptions, misinformation, blind faith and hate about the current game industry in a single paragraph.

I sure hope it doesn’t represent the mentality of “casual” gamers.

I’ll probably buy an Xbox now. I already own a Wii and a PS3, and frankly, there’s a whole library of games that I want access to.

The XBox 360 and the Zune are related, as both symbolic of Microsoft’s consumer products ambitions and folly. MS needs to concentrate on its core niche- writing cool code like it is doing with its Silverlight and upcoming releases. Design was never a MS strength .Maybe they should give the Xbox complimentary with Office, or make it ad supported.

I agree with “Disgruntled 360 owner”. If somewhere between 20% and 50% of owners need to return their product for a major repair within the warranty period, eventually this creates a bad product image. And, switching costs are relatively low, because games do not wear out much and thus can be sold used on eBay. Hence, instead of sticking with a flawed product, even current owners may eventually want to switch.

Add to this MS’s somewhat paranoid warranty policy (can’t just bring your product to the local service center and detailed product registration), and the compelling alternate offerings that squeeze the Xbox 360 both on the high end (PS3) and the low end (Wii), XBox 360’s position is not enviable.

For full disclosure, I add that I still have my Xbox 360 (freshly returned from repair), but also have a PS2, and a PSP (none of which I really use that much).

Lagging sales due to the fact that most folks that want one already have one. Don’t forget Xbox was on the market a full year before either competitor. And @susieQ, Wii Fit + Grandparents = Broken hip!

i think rrod is an issue that’s behind msft – at least one would hope it would be. with respect to the price-cuts, they certainly can’t hurt. the xbox has a wicked set of games – perhaps the best on the market depending what you’re into. i still may buy a ps3 one day -but only becuase it’s a cheap upgradable bluray player.

I agree with Disgruntled 360 owner..after going through 3 of the original Xbox consoles, I decided to upgrade to the 360 a few months ago..After spending nearly $500 for the premium package, the damn thing died in less than a week (red circle of death)…Instead of sending it back to Microsoft, I took it back for a refund…never again will I waste my money on one of these peices of junk

susieQ,

Give us a break!

Real research has proven that your kids are not loosing more weight swingging there hands around playing the Wii versus playing on other consoles. You really think kids are playing Wii Fit. Your research from South Park says it all…

Yes – thank you for not letting your kids play xbox. There are enough South Park kids playing on there as it is.

I was going to purchase a 360. Tried my friends he has many games. Hes also a hard core gamer I found he saved most all right at the start. I asked why he said try them. I did games where very hard to get into. Think I will stick with Sony and the Wii.

I want to shoot myself after reading all these ridiculous comments. It’s unreal how far-fetched some of you people are with your analysis. How is a price cut a bad thing for consumers, especially right before the holidays? It’ll help them sell more units. Talking about how sales have slowed for the 360 because everyone in the world already has one is just plain wrong. Consumers are starting to realize the value in competing consoles.

If MSFT didn’t have a year lead on the market they would be hurting right now.

@Shocked (#6)

Thank You. Finally, someone with an enlightened opinion.

I had a difficult time getting the Wii. I’m not sure if there is a manufacturing shortage or what but they do sell fast when they finally get in a store, at least in the Northeast USA.

However after playing the machine for a couple of weeks off and on, I find it a poor gaming system that really has little appeal for anyone above 13 years of age.

The graphics are horrible, the controllers are novel, but the games seem best suited to kids and not anyone else. Just looking at the selection of games I find it reinforces the opinion that it is great for young kids, but not good for anyone else.

I also own the Wii Fit and although I am sure it is nice, I haven’t even played it yet, and it goes the same way as any other exercise fad I have come across…Collects dust instead of motivating me to exercise more.

I am disappointed in the Wii overall, even though the controller is incredible…You need games that people want to play. I’ve tried 6 games now and the only one I like so far is the sports one that came with it, and that gets lame after a while.

I might sell it on Ebay…Not sure.
Note though that the XBox is much more than $200 with all the upgrades you will want, but then again the Wii wants every controller they make just to play. The standard controller is not enough at all.

Thank you for your post. It’s nice to see some reason after reading those two posts you mentioned. I’m glad they’re not in charge of the country. lol!

Perhaps, it may be due to the subject matter, but in all my time reading NYT. com I have yet to encounter any article for which the comments were riddled with so many grammatical errors and abbreviations. Too bad Merriam-Webster has not yet developed a console game, it might benefit some of the posters to this article.

As said many times before, the Xbox 360 was out a year before the Wii and PS3, thus sales lacking for it nowadays are a skewed statistic if it doesnt include that fact.

Yes, I am a Xbox 360 Owner, but also posess a PS2 and a Nintendo 64.

As far as the PS3 goes I havnt seen that many games that are exclusive to it that are amazingly good (But i have a few friends who rave about Metal Gear Solid 4) But its hardware lends me to think that eventually once Sony lowers the price a bit and fully uses their unike features to theif full advantage

I absolutely love the comment that susieQ posted.

Video games don’t kill people.
Other people do.

Like everyone is saying with the right parental control, kids can play their Xbox 360’s without gore, violence, etc.

As for the Wii, it is fun to play but if you can play Wii Tennis with just the flick of your wrist, I doubt kids will get anything out of it.

Yeah but if the kids are playing Wii then they’ll obsess on tennis and become rabid obsessed tennis players, eventually set to attack others with tennis rackets.
