Lionsgate has lined up its first slate of digital-first projects from its newly branded Studio L.
This spring, the studio will debut three films meant to appeal to a millennial, digital-first audience, including a noir comedy starring Adam Pally, Rachel Bloom and Vincent Kartheiser.
Studio L was established to develop a pipeline of film and television projects designed for digital distribution. “In today’s fast-changing media landscape, Lionsgate is committed to creating and distributing various types of content for next generation audiences with some of the most exciting creative voices and innovative partners in our industry,” Studio L executive vp Seth Laderman said Thursday in making the announcement. “The projects announced today signal our commitment to finding stand-out material, incubating new talent and delivering authentic storytelling. We will also continue to cultivate and foster fresh opportunities with existing Lionsgate properties, all built around Studio L’s low-risk, high-reward distribution model.”
Studio L’s first three projects show a focus on youth audiences. The Honor List, which hails from writer Marilyn Fu and director Elissa Down, stars YouTube star Meghan Rienks, Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Karrueche Tran (Claws) and Arden Cho (Teen Wolf). Liz Destro is producing alongside Cinestar Pictures. The film, which is set to be released May 11, is the debut title from Popsugar Films.
Most Likely to Murder stars Pally, Bloom and Kartheiser in a home-for-the-holidays noir-comedy. It was written and produced by Dan Gregor, who also directs, and Doug Mand, who appears in the film as a supporting character. It will have its premiere at SXSW and then be released May 1.
Studio L has also inked a deal with new media network Brat to distribute its first feature-length film, Chicken Girls: The Movie. Based on the YouTube show of the same name, which has generated nearly 100 million views, the pic will feature Brat’s roster of up-and-coming talent. It will be released later this spring.
Also in the works at Studio L are Blue Mountain State follow-up Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland; a series based on The Blair Witch Project; and a series based on the comedy Waiting. Lionsgate also has film production partnerships with BuzzFeed and The Onion.
