Apple might not have its own internet TV service, but the company’s Apple TV is gradually turning a into a streaming box for other services aimed at cord cutters. Sling TV is already there, and today Sony launched a PlayStation Vue app, which lets Vue subscribers stream live programming from AMC, Discovery, FX, ESPN, and many other channels right from the Apple TV. “You will be able to take advantage of Apple TV’s Siri Remote and easy navigation with touch, while enjoying PlayStation Vue’s sleek look and feel,” Dan Myers, Sony’s head of product for Vue, wrote in a blog post.

You can’t sign up for Vue directly from the Apple TV, however; that still requires a web browser, since Sony presumably doesn’t want to give Apple a cut of in-app subscriptions. PlayStation Vue allows customers to stream on up to 5 devices simultaneously, which is useful considering the growing number of platforms it has already expanded to. The biggest feature that sets Vue apart from Dish’s Sling TV service is its cloud DVR, which helps ease the transition away from traditional cable. Prices start at $29 or $39 per month in markets where live network programming (CBS, FOX, NBC, etc.) is available.

PlayStation Vue isn’t yet integrated with Apple’s new TV app, which aggregates TV shows and movies from multiple streaming services and puts them in one central destination. Sony might soon have incentive to make that happen, though; yesterday Bloomberg reported that Apple will halve its cut of in-app subscriptions from 30 percent down to 15 percent for video apps that serve content to the TV app. That difference might be enough for Sony to enable direct subscriptions, in turn upping Vue’s subscriber count.
