Lionsgate, Univision Launching Spanish-Language SVOD Service

12 Sep, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Lionsgate and Univision are partnering for the launch of a movie subscription-streaming service in 2017 — the first SVOD service targeting Spanish-speaking and bilingual Hispanic consumers in the United States.

The unnamed, un-priced service will feature comedy, family, kids, horror and drama titles, with many available on the same date as their theatrical release in Latin American markets. It will also encompass titles from Lionsgate’s joint venture with Televisa, Pantelion Films, as well as from Lionsgate’s 16,000-title library and other catalogs dubbed into Spanish.

“Our premium movie service checks all the boxes for success — a world-class partner in Univision, films from the Pantelion brand that has great equity among Spanish-speaking audiences, strong management, terrific intellectual property and a well-defined market opportunity,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. “This new service has all the ingredients to be the leading premium movie channel for Hispanic audiences in the U.S. as well as a great addition to our growing portfolio of SVOD services.”

Indeed, Lionsgate continues to mine digital distribution opportunities, including partnerships with Tribeca Enterprises for Tribeca Shortlist, San Diego Comic-Con International for Comic-Con HQ, and actor/comedian Kevin Hart for Laugh Out Loud, which bows next year.
