OTT Service Forecast To See Sharp Growth In Next 5 Years

Over-the-top video platforms continue to see sharply higher new business and usage -- and will see rapid growth in five years.

Parks Associates says nearly 60% of U.S. broadband homes have used at least one OTT service in the past month; with more than 25% of homes using two or more in the past 30 days. Overall, nearly 60% of U.S. TV homes subscribe to OTT service with a monthly fee.

The survey notes 25% of all OTT video business in the U.S. started up this year; with 40% of all OTT services launched within the last two years.

The biggest of these remains Netflix. Amazon Prime Video is next, followed by Hulu. Netflix has some 43 million U.S. subscribers. While it does not release its data, reports suggest Amazon is close behind at about 40 million. Hulu has 12 million U.S. customers.

Following these top three are: Major League Baseball, WWE Network, HBO Now, Crunchyroll, NFL Game Game, The Blaze and Sling TV.

A separate report suggests that in five years subscription video on demand services will reach 306 million in 200 countries by 2020 -- double the levels currently in 2015 -- according to a report by Digital TV Research. It projects Netflix U.S. subscriber base will rise to 50.4 million in 2020.

Global revenues from SVOD services is estimated to hit $26.8 billion in 2020. Netflix will be the leader here as well -- getting to annual revenue of $12.2 billion by the time. Overall the study project Netflix to have 115 million global subscribers.
