HBO today announced that it will be producing six new episodes of “High Maintenance,” the landmark indie comedy created by Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfield.

Originally distributed for free via Vimeo, “High Maintenance” became Vimeo’s first VOD series last fall. The show’s ease in shifting from distribution platform to distribution platform is due in part to its high-quality production value and in part to the show’s anthology-esque format — each episode focuses on a new customer of a pot dealer (Sinclair), who pedals around New York City delivering his product.

The simple premise and quality execution made it a breakout star in the web series world when it first premiered and has since attracted high level acting talent like Dan Stevens, Yael Stone and Tracee Chimo.

“We are thrilled to bring this sophisticated and clever series to our HBO audience,” HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo said in a release. But what about Vimeo?

In his own statement, Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor was more than upbeat about the news. “We’re very excited for Ben and Katja and proud to have launched High Maintenance as Vimeo’s first original series. For HBO to pick up the next season is a testament to this incredible show and we look forward to continuing to support it.”

Interested in checking out the previous cycles of “High Maintenance”? More than just the first taste is free on Vimeo, for right now, at least. According to the HBO release, all 19 previous episodes of “High Maintenance” will be available on HBO, HBO Go and HBO NOW later this year. We’ve reached out for comment as to what will happen to the Vimeo-hosted episodes once they move to HBO and will update this post with the news.

This news is just the latest exciting twist in one of original digital content’s more exciting success stories. As Trainor said in his statement, “The pickup by HBO is incredible validation for the show as well as the global creative community developing and releasing innovative programming directly on Vimeo. The barriers between online and traditional distribution continue to erode.”
