Stealthy cable startup Layer3 TV has tapped Lindsay Gardner as chief content officer.
Gardner joined Layer3 as an advisor last August and has been heading the company’s content advisory board, but has formalized his relationship by joining the company full-time. In his new role, Gardner will report to CEO Jeff Binder and will build up a team focused on establishing partnerships with cable networks, broadcasters and other content creators and packagers. He also will continue to chair the content advisory board, which comprises industry leaders consulting on content acquisition and partnership strategies.
“Few executives in our industry are more respected and trusted than Lindsay,” said Binder. “Lindsay’s leadership and decades of experience make him uniquely equipped to grow our relationships with the programming community. We are thrilled to have him as a key part of the senior leadership team.”

Gardner has been a senior advisor to Oaktree Capital Management since 2010. He also has held roles at Miramax and MediaTech Capital Partners. He previously spent eight years at Fox Networks, where he served as president of distribution until 2007.
“It is a career highlight to join Layer3 TV’s entrepreneurial team of world class cable and technology leaders,” said Gardner. “This team knows the cable space, its traditions, and its future.”
Layer3 executives have been quiet about what they are working on, but have said they are looking to create a next-generation cable provider. The company, which was founded in 2013, has been steadily growing, building out a team of about 65 at its headquarters in Denver and satellite office in Boston. Layer3 is backed by North Bridge Venture Partners and Evolution Media Partners, whose shareholders include TPG Growth, CAA and Jeff Skoll‘s Participant Media.
