Some of DreamWorks Animation‘s most beloved characters are headed to YouTube.
Shrek, Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda will star as vloggers on the animation studio’s new DreamWorksTV YouTube channel, which launches today.
The channel was created in partnership with digital studio AwesomenessTV, which DWA acquired last year for up to $150 million, with Awesomeness CEO Brian Robbins overseeing the project. It will feature a blend of original animated series, family-friendly reality TV programs and appearances from iconic DWA-owned IP.
“We’re tapping into the invaluable knowledge that Brian has amassed from his success with AwesomenessTV to create a unique, short-form, laugh-out-loud mobile experience for families, said DWA CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. “This is a huge opportunity for the DreamWorks brand.”
Among the popular IP being re-imagined for DreamWorksTV is Richie Rich, the comic book character that spawned a 1980s animated TV series and, later, a movie starring Macaulay Culkin. A new Richie Rich series, currently in production, is set to debut later this summer.
“DreamWorksTV is committed to delivering original content, from scripted live-action series based on great characters like Richie Rich, to fresh new animated characters like Jimmy Blue Shorts to vlogs and other short-form content featuring the much beloved Shrek, Po and Puss in Boots,” said Robbins. “We are combining the DreamWorks brand with lessons learned from AwesomenessTV to create content that will be embraced by families everywhere.”
DreamWorks TV launches Monday with animated series Gorillaville and live-action Record Setter Kids. Other series launching this week include Watch This, which curates shorts from around the Web, and RetroTunes, which features highlights from the DWA-owned Classic Media library.
