BBC iPlayer breaks new record

UK pubcaster the BBC has said its iPlayer VoD service received a record-breaking three billion requests for shows during 2013, an increase of 33% on 2012.

Motoring series Top Gear was the most popular programme to be requested with 3.4 million viewers attempting to watch the first episode of its Africa special alone.

The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who received 3.1 million requests.

The BBC also said that requests to watch iPlayer shows from tablet devices had increased by 104% year-on-year, taking over from PCs during Christmas.

In related news, the BBC’s UKTV joint venture commercial channels Watch, Gold, Dave and Alibi have joined the catch up line-up on the BSkyB pay TV platform. It’s UKTV’s first such pact and comes as part of a carriage renewal signed in October.
