TORONTO – U.S. streaming giant Netflix has inked a supply deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to bulk up its online video offerings for its Canadian subscribers.
The exclusive licensing agreement allows Netflix Canada subscribers to see the first two seasons of The Vampire Diaries, with the third cycle to come, and all previous seasons of Pretty Little Liars online.
And the J.J. Abrams sci-fi series Fringe will debut on the Canadian digital streaming service from January 1.
All three series air on Bell Media channels, which has a separate TV supply deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution for first-run series, and has no syndication rights to the series.
Other content headed to Netflix Canada as part of the WB online deal include The Hangover Part II, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and the comedy Horrible Bosses, with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman.
The films and TV shows will show up on Netflix Canada for a limited period after their Canadian pay TV window.
“We are thrilled to be the exclusive online subscription home for The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Fringe and great Warner Bros. feature films in Canada,” Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said in a statement Monday.
Sarandos unveiled the online distribution deal with Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. International Television.
