LONDON – BSkyB‘s new standalone online video streaming service Now TV will add live sports content before the end of the year and TV shows from the Sky entertainment channels in 2013, BSkyB CEO Jeremy Darroch said Thursday.
The service launched earlier this month with movies, and management had said it would add further content over time.
Darroch said the launch of sports content late this year makes sense “before the holiday season,” but he didn’t give a specific date.
Meanwhile, the content from BSkyB’s suite of entertainment networks, such as Sky 1, Sky Atlantic and Sky Arts, will add to the programming mix available on Now TV some time next year, he said. The company has been increasing its investment in original programming on those networks.
Now TV targets the market, in which LoveFilm and Netflix are already playing. It costs $23 for a monthly subscription or $1.55-$5.42 for single movie titles under a “pay & play” service. BSkyB is betting that it won’t encourage cord cutting, but attract customers who have so far not subscribed to traditional pay TV services.
Movies currently offered on the service come from Hollywood majors such as Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures and 11 Sky Movies channels. Sky Movies is the U.K.’s most popular movie subscription service.
