Comcast Pirate Bay Issues Were Global Crossing's Fault
According to P2P Site Transit Provider Serious Tubes Networks
Yesterday we noted that Comcast customers suddenly couldn't access The Pirate Bay, leading many to assume incorrectly -- given Comcast's history with P2P traffic -- that the nation's largest ISP had finally decided to pull the plug on the popular P2P website. Comcast immediately jumped into our forums to insist they had nothing to do with the problems and that they don't block websites. The problem has since been resolved, and Serious Tubes Networks, who deliver transit to The Pirate Bay, states that the problem was Global Crossing's fault and was resolved without the help Comcast supposedly says they provided:
quote:
Comcast did not help us fix The Pirate Bay. The problem was GBLX using reverse path filtering. We shut down one of our transits because it was flapping. The result was that all outgoing traffic to GBLX got filtered even though the packets took the same path as before. The Pirate Bay is using different paths for incoming and outgoing traffic to avoid beeing traced. We don’t even know where their servers are. We resolved the issue by activating our other transit again.

History?

I cant recall Comcast ever blocking sites. Forging packets, though bad practice, is a lot different than blocking websites entirely...

Should run through the forumn, and see if the people complaining about not being able to access TPB are the same ones that gripe about the cap....hm.....

TPB caused their own problems

If the Pirate Bay wasn't so paranoid and followed standard network routing practices, this whole episode wouldn't have occurred.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

assymetric routing is quite common in many large scale sp/enterprise networks, as is reverse-path filtering (rpf).

Asymmetric routing is non-standard practice? Since when?

We indeed offered to help - it just seems to have resolved itself without that.

Download a movie or two...

Download a movie or two in support of TPB...
Consider it Civil Disobedience.
Just make sure it's a movie you either already own or can get on Netflix-that way they can't *bust* you.

Frack that. I download movies all the time. Even though I don't have Comcrap, I still have caps with another provider .

Yeah, that's great. Thanks for driving up my movie prices.

Never ceases to amaze me the amount of bitching a bunch of net thieves will do when their favorite thieving site goes offline.

Never ceases to amaze ME how people STILL cannot differentiate between theft and copyright infringement.

Well at least you're not denying it. The result is the same. Those of us with a conscience are still getting screwed because of it.

difference

tier-1 internet companies have a vested interest in selling bandwidth. cable companies do not (except, in the sense that best effort internet counts).. guess which one is more willing to investiagte these kinds of issues FASTER than the other?

btw, TPB, despite the name has many *LEGIT* torrents on there as well. if large corporations such as COMCAST and AT&T can save more money by having you utilize the internet less that's higher montly profits.
