NEW YORK — As TV distributors continue to broaden their services in the digital age, Dish Network on Wednesday unveiled its Google TV offer, while Verizon’s FiOS rolled out a new service that allows subscribers to access content on mobile devices.
Satellite TV provider Dish said it is pricing its Google TV solution at $179. Said Dish chief marketing officer Ira Bahr: “Customers can now surf the Web, check e-mail, interact with social media and find additional online television content all from the comfort of their living room sofa.”
The Google TV solution requires a DVR integration service of $4 per month in addition to the $179 set-top box.
Meanwhile, FiOS TV said it is rolling out Flex View, a new feature that allows customers to buy or rent and view VOD movies on multiple devices, including computers and select mobile devices, such as cell phones, tablets and media players.
The new feature is now available to most FiOS subscribers and will be in all FiOS markets by the end of the month. The more than 1,400 movie titles currently available are expected to grow to more than 2,000 by year-end. The number of available content pieces will at least triple by next year, when including TV shows, FiOS said.
Unlike streaming services, Flex View lets users download titles and watch even without an Internet connection.
“Verizon is taking the triple play to the triple screen, making on-the-go video programming quick and easy,” said Shawn Strickland, vp consumer strategy and planning for Verizon.
