After Online Success, an “It Gets Better” Book

It has been one month since the creation of “It Gets Better,” the viral video campaign intended to speak directly to gay youths who are the subject of bullying and homophobia.

Now, 10 million video views later, the project will be turned into a book, the publisher announced on Thursday.

Dutton, a division of Penguin Group USA, said it would publish “It Gets Better” as a collection of essays from celebrities and ordinary people who want to share their stories. The book is scheduled for publication in March 2011.

The project was started by Dan Savage, the sex columnist, who wanted to find a way to reach out to gay, lesbian and transgender teenagers who felt tormented by their peers. Mr. Savage had read the story of a 15-year-old who committed suicide last month, reportedly after being targeted by bullies.

Since the campaign began, more than 700 videos have been posted online, including contributions from Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state, the actor Neil Patrick Harris and the talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Mr. Savage said he would contribute the proceeds from the book to organizations supporting gay youth.
