A Camcorder Insurgent Goes HD

the Flip Mino HD

The fastest growing company in Silicon Valley over the last few years was not Facebook, VMWare, or all-mighty Google. According to Deloitte, the professional services firm, it was a company whose name you probably won’t recognize but whose product you will: Pure Digital Technologies, maker of the popular Flip video camera.

In a study released last month, Deloitte said that revenue at Pure Digital, a 90-employee company based in San Francisco, grew 44,667 percent, the highest rate in Silicon Valley over the last five years. Pure Digital says it has sold over 1.5 million devices since it first unveiled its Flip product line in 2007.

This week, Pure Digital is showing how it achieved that distinction and carved out the leading share of the camcorder market: the company is unveiling the Flip Mino HD, a 3.3 oz camcorder that captures video in crisp high-definition and allows owners to easily play clips on their televisions and upload them to video sharing sites like YouTube and MySpace.

The device costs $230 or about $50 more than the standard-definition Flip Mino and $90 more than the original Flip Ultra.

Jonathan Kaplan, Pure Digital’s chief executive, said that the Flip HD aims at a more sophisticated consumer who resists recording their child’s first steps in standard, VGA-resolution video. “This is our first product that is starting to scratch a little bit at the traditional camcorder buyer,” he said.

The story of Pure Digital Technology is a remarkable one we have told before: a company outmaneuvering the consumer electronics giants with a simple product that captures what consumers want. It designed an easy way to record, preserve and share memories instead of a device with a lot of confusing buttons that ends up sitting unused on a shelf.

The new Flip Mino HD performed well in my tests, but there is one nagging problem, not of its own making. It is actually difficult to share the great-looking video the camera records, since Web sites like YouTube and MySpace do not yet display user-uploaded clips in high definition.

Until they get there, the Mino’s HD video clips are best shared over e-mail – or among people in the same room clustered around the computer or television.

I have Flip Ultra, and what the article does not recognize is that even in the lower resolution mode of the Flip Ultra emailing videos is not practical due to the size of the file. In the standard (i.e. low) definition a 50 second video is a little over 28 megs. Difficult to email due to server size limitations on email. I would imagine the HD files will be much larger, if our DVR experience is any indication.

Nice device though. I would prefer image stabilization and an optical zoom over HD, given a choice.

maybe so, but with the economic downturn expected this holiday season, i highly doubt a frivolous $100 camcorder will be on too many peoples’ lists. staff cuts and quarterly loss = immenent

My Kodak Zi6 has the Flip Mino HD beat, hands-down: AA batteries, SD card slot, bigger screen, better zoom, and easy-to-edit .mov files. Oh yeah, the price? I only paid $180.

I love the Flip! I bought the original model 2 yrs back when it was not called the flip, but had Pure Digital as the name on it.

It still works! Its part of my daily life, I take vidoes everywhere personal or at silicon valley events and embed it in my blog which cannot be done by email sharing.

I have bought the mino for my work and for clients and friends.

I disagree on one point you made that HD not being supported on youtube or myspace will limit flip users to just email their videos.

Users like me who have made video a part of their expression/communication will just move past youtube to vimeo or other sites. My gut says youtube and myspace will catchup and offer HD support. For example, I watch my flip video to limit to 100MB which is 5 mins, and if it gets larger than that, youtube won’t take it so I upload them on vimeo.

For the record, I don’t work for flip, have never come across anyone from the company and am just a super happy customer.

If you’d like to share HD video on an online sharing site, you should really take a look at Vimeo.

It offers today HD resolution playback. I can’t imagine how big those email messages containing your HD clips would be. :-)

Vimeo (vimeo.com) displays user-generated videos in HD.

damn, i just got the mino earlier this year.. i’m not laying out $230.. but for those who were thinking of getting one it’s probably good news.
btw, Creative makes the Aveo, which is similar to the Mino but only $100.

k.

I have been using the Flip Ultra for several months now and the Mino sounds like the next step up. Ease of use and portability are the key features of Pur Digital’s marketing success.

I love the new Mino HD, I have the Ultra and a personalized mino and its perfect for having handy to grab on the go footage i.e. kids and my get together with friends. If your in the market for a small camcorder you will not be disappointed with the Flip. My friend has a kodak zi6 and the memory card gets stuck in slot, requires pliers to get it out!

I, like the 4th poster Sudha Jamthe, bought the flip when it was just Pure Digital. One of the best purchases I have ever made. And although HD is nice, the image quality of my 2+ year old camera is still pretty good. I’d say I’m now loyal to this company for whenever I upgrade.

OP: To display movie clips in HD on youtube add the following at the end of the URL &fmt=18

This will display the clip in HD IF it originally posted as such.

I love my flip, and the combination of flip and blip.tv is amazing…. check it out.

(not employed or compensated by either)

Skipd,
what planet are you living on….must be Macworld. Most people use PC’s and they do not come with software that will edit .mov files.

For comparison, I just bought a Kodak Zi6 and a 4GB SD card at walmart for about $200. The video is really good, but makes me want image stabilization.

Better yet would to add an infrared (IR) feature to the Flip.

I have two Sony DSC-V1 5MP cameras which have the usual IR feature, which is can be used in both still and movie modes. While the V line was discontinued a few years back. I think they may have a current model with the IR feature – get one before they drop the feature!

They do have the feature in the bulker camcorders but in a small handheld it is rare.

The IR movie mode is really fun at house parties and other low light events! (Raves, bonfires you name it)

Check youtube for IR flims and you will understand

I would not overestimate video editing software that comes bundled with these cameras. Why bother when you can use free online video editing at jumpcut etc.?

Secondly the Flip is not the only game in town and they continuously show they ignore what people want. The bloody USB connector that takes up ALL space meant for ALL other USB connectors? This is a very ill-conceived idea..

Anyway I was waiting for this update but I’ll probably pass it and get a Kodak or a new Vado HD – once it is available.

See these videos, btw, amazing video quality:

I agree with SkipD. My Panasonic pocket camera TZ5 has HD video, a high res screen, 10x zoom and image stabilization – for the same price as the flip HD. I’ve been tempted to buy a flip, but I would never carry around both the flip and a camera.

I just got mine. It’s fun and so easy to use. I’m taking it on a trip to Peru and to the Inaugural in January. One thing to know though is this HD model plays back smoothly only a Mac that has an Intel system, like my Mac Pro. Footage stutters on my iBook.

Good thing youtube hosts hd now :D
PureDigital was just ahead of the curve.

i just got a flip mino hd camcorder yesterday and its pretty cool…. but…. the videos dont work on my computer and the file size is way way way to big…. i just dont understand why it has to be that big and also for the regular ones its big too…. i dont understand how this is handy when i cant even make a ten minute movie without over doing it on my computers memory….

enad, I just got mine and I agree, the files are huge. Had I know that I would not have gotten it. My computer can handle it with no problem but You Tube won’t. What I did was made the movie with the Flip software because it’s easy. Then I took that movie and made it in Windows movie maker. The 3 minute movie was 200 MG and only 12 MG after I remade it, however it lost a lot of the quality.
Not thrilled with it all all due to the size of the files.
