Amazon has revealed today that the recently released Apple TV version of Amazon Video has enjoyed more downloads in its first week than any other app in the history of tvOS.
The fact that this has happened on a platform which has long boasted both Netflix and its own iTunes collection of TV shows and movies shows just how important the presence of Amazon Video has become to any video streaming device.
Apple has yet to reveal more detailed information on Amazon Video’s success, such as the exact number of times the app has been downloaded, which regions it has been most popular in, and how many of those downloading it were existing subscribers and how many are new ones. it wouldn’t be surprising, though, to see Amazon’s subscriber numbers enjoyed a tidy jump over the past month.
It likely didn’t do the tvOS Amazon Video app any harm, either, that its launch coincided neatly with the appearance of the second season of hugely popular Amazon Original, The Grand Tour.
It will be interesting to see if adding the Amazon Video app to tvOS has led to a boost in Apple TV sales in the run up to Christmas. If I had a dollar for every time someone has said to me in the past they wouldn’t buy an Apple TV until it gets Amazon Video I’d be able to afford, well, an Apple TV 4K.
It will also be interesting to see when the next round of sales data comes out if Amazon finally allowing Amazon Video on Apple TV has damaged sales of its own Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Stick devices.
