In a further sign that Amazon is betting big on live sports, the online giant on Wednesday signed a streaming deal with Discovery Communications to deliver premium sports content to Amazon Prime customers in Germany and Austria.
The deal will see Amazon Prime in Germany and Austria carry content from Discovery’s Eurosport channel, including live coverage of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, and Friday night games from Germany’s Bundesliga soccer division. Eurosport will have a stand-alone player on Amazon Channels, the Prime service that offers branded content from third party providers which subscribers.
The Eurosport Player on Amazon Channels which will also feature such events as tennis’ French, U.S. and Australian opens and the motorcycle racing World Championships, will be available for $5.84 (4.99 euro) a month to Amazon Prime customers in Germany. Events can be viewed live or on demand.
The service went live Wednesday.
The German deal follows Amazon’s agreement with the NFL, announced earlier this year, to stream 10 Thursday Night Football games for its U.S. Amazon Prime members as well as a NFL game on Christmas Day. That one-year deal, valued at around $50 million, is the biggest single move so far by Amazon into the sports streaming space.
