Amazon has temporarily stopped selling its Fire TV streaming box: Amazon.com is currently listing the Fire TV as “currently unavailable,” with a note telling customers: “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”
An Amazon spokesperson blamed the shortage on “overwhelming customer demand,” and said that consumers could still buy the cheaper Fire TV Stick. However, the fact that Amazon — a company obsessed with logistics — doesn’t know “when or if” it will get new Fire TVs suggests that this isn’t just about a seasonal shortage.
Amazon first introduced the Fire TV as a streaming device that combines video apps with gaming in April of 2014, and followed up with the Fire TV stick six months later. Apple is reportedly introducing a new version of its Apple TV at a press event in early September, and it’s likely that Amazon will unveil the next version of the Fire TV around that date as well.
