Netflix and Walt Disney Studios today announced a new multiyear licensing deal, under which Netflix will be the exclusive Canadian subscription-video service for Disney live-action and animated feature films in the pay-TV window.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. In late 2012, the companies cut a similar deal for the U.S., under which Netflix will obtain exclusive pay-TV window rights for the Mouse House’s films starting in 2016.

Netflix’s rights to Disney pics for Canada will commence with 2015 theatrically released feature films, including new titles from Disney Live Action, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Disneynature and DreamWorks Studios.

Canadian customers of Netflix will have access to Disney movies approximately eight months after titles leave theaters, which is faster than has traditionally been the case for premium pay-TV window rights.

Disney’s current pay-TV window licensees in the Great White North are: Corus Entertainment, covering Western Canada, which airs movies on its Movie Central network; and Bell Canada for the eastern half of the country, on the telco’s Movie Network, Movie Network Encore and Super Ecran nets.

“We are delighted to be the new pay-TV home in Canada for the world’s highest-quality, most imaginative and entertaining films,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer. “Canadians of all ages will have an incredible range of great stories and characters to look forward to.”

Dan Cohen, EVP of pay television and digital for Disney-ABC Domestic Television, added, “Netflix continues to be a highly valued partner on a global scale and we couldn’t be more pleased to extend our great relationship with this exciting new agreement.”

Netflix launched its Canadian streaming service in 2010. The company also has cut pacts for first-run films from Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox in the territory.
