Akamai adds more speed to its network with FastSoft acquisition

Akamai, the company behind one of the Web’s largest content delivery platforms, is adding more speed to its network after it announced the acquisition of FastSoft, a content acceleration software maker, in an undisclosed deal.

The acquisition of six-year-old FastSoft is set to boost the quality of service and performance of Akamai’s cloud-based system, thanks to technologies that include patented algorithms which accelerate file download transfers and speed up Web traffic, while reducing latency and packet loss.

In addition to anticipated improvements to its service, the deal will see Akamai open a Center of Excellence in Pasadena, California, where FastSoft is based. The center will combine the FastSoft team with Akamai’s existing engineering group to focus on network protocols and technology optimization.

“FastSoft has developed unique acceleration software that is expected to be a strong complement to Akamai,” said Bill Wheaton, senior VP and GM of Akamai’s Media Division. “Their development team possesses extensive experience in advanced TCP technology that we believe can enhance the delivery of rich media, as well as support future initiatives in the areas of mobile applications and cloud performance.”

“Our content acceleration technology is used by some of the largest companies on the Internet. We are excited to join forces with Akamai in helping to make the Internet as fast as possible,” said FastSoft CEO Ed Snyder.

While Akamai did not confirm the price of the acquisition, which was completed in cash, the company said that it does not expect the deal to have a “material impact” on its financial results.

Akamai is well known for its Internet speed tests, which are based on video delivery solutions that are used by a host of the Web’s top firms. The firm runs a number of Apple’s services, to name just one.
